Waiting on Wednesday: Pulse by Patrick Carman

For those of you who don't know "Waiting On" Wednesday is an event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. The purpose is to let others know which book you are anticipating and can't wait til it comes out to read it.

Pulse (Pulse, #1)
Pulse by Patrick Carman
Hardcover, 320 pages
Expected publication: February 26th 2013 by Katherine Tegen Books

Synopsis:

From New York Times bestselling author Patrick Carman, a teen fantasy-adventure of epic proportions. In 2051, some teens have a “pulse,” the power to move objects with their minds. Compulsively readable, with thrilling action scenes and a tender love story.

The year is 2051, and the world is still recognizable. With the help of her mysterious classmate Dylan Gilmore, Faith Daniels discovers that she can move objects with her mind. This telekinetic ability is called a “pulse,” and Dylan has the talent, too.

In riveting action scenes, Faith demonstrates her ability to use her pulse against a group of telekinesis masters so powerful they will flatten their enemies by uprooting street lights, moving boulders, and changing the course of a hurtling hammer so that it becomes a deadly weapon. But even with great talent, the mind—and the heart—can be difficult to control. If Faith wants to join forces with Dylan and save the world, she’ll have to harness the power of both.

Patrick Carman’s Pulse trilogy is a stunning, action-filled triumph about the power of the mind—and the power of love.

Why I am Waiting:
Who wouldn't want to have the ability to move objects with your mind. I can tell already this book is totally going to be up my alley. With bad guys fighting good guys and mix that with a telekinectic ability called a"pulse" and a love story; this story will make one heck of a book. I really can not wait for February for this one to come out. =]

Review: Ten by Gretchen McNeil

Ten
Hardcover, 294 pages
Published September 18th 2012 by Balzer + Bray

Synopsis:

SHHHH!
Don't spread the word!
Three-day weekend. House party.
White Rock House on Henry Island.
You do NOT want to miss it.

It was supposed to be the weekend of their lives—an exclusive house party on Henry Island. Best friends Meg and Minnie each have their reasons for being there (which involve T.J., the school’s most eligible bachelor) and look forward to three glorious days of boys, booze and fun-filled luxury.

But what they expect is definitely not what they get, and what starts out as fun turns dark and twisted after the discovery of a DVD with a sinister message: Vengeance is mine.

Suddenly people are dying, and with a storm raging, the teens are cut off from the outside world. No electricity, no phones, no internet, and a ferry that isn’t scheduled to return for two days. As the deaths become more violent and the teens turn on each other, can Meg find the killer before more people die? Or is the killer closer to her than she could ever imagine?

My Thoughts/Review

All I can say is this book was fan-freakintastic. I was hooked from the premise and then again from the very first page. When I heard this book was based on And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, I knew right off the bat that I would love this book and my expectations were met and then some. I can not believe how good it was. I really thought that I would be able to figure out who the killer was in the end, but I was completely blind sided. I don't think anyone would be able to get it. It started a little slowly in the beginning but that is what really set the mood for the later half of the book where it got really suspenseful and thrilling. The tempo of the book kept rising and rising til the climax at the end. I loved the blend and mix of different people that were invited to the party and how they were all connected in the end. And the way they each were each killed off was a perfect way a murder story could have gone. The background story that connected them all together really made perfect sense and was very well thought out.

Meg, the main character, had a real impressionable quality on me. I really loved her voice and how she thought about things. She had a really intelligent mind that saw things in a different light. I kept changing my mind on who I thought the killer was based on what she was thinking. The book twisted and turned in many different directions, that at each person dieing off I really didn't know which way it was going to go. I was turning around so many different alternatives in my mind that I wasn't really expecting the way that it ended. The suspense, intrigue and mystery of this book was so good. My heart was in my throat multiple times.

McNeil is a complete genius and wrote the perfect story, I found absolutely nothing wrong with it. I can't believe I haven't read anything by her before. I am definitely going to pick up her other book Possess and read it as soon as I can. I will also be reading and can't wait for all of her future books she comes out with.  I loved Ten completely and would recommend it to absolutely anyone. If you are interested in this book, definitely pick up a copy soon. You will not be disappointed at all. Ten is one of the best mystery thrillers I have read in a very long time.

Overall, I give this book:
One of the best, suspenseful, thrilling mysteries I have read in a very long time. =]

Waiting on Wednesday: Life of Pi

For those of you who don't know "Waiting On" Wednesday is an event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. The purpose is to let others know which book you are anticipating and can't wait til it comes out to read it.

Life of Pi
Life of Pi by Yann Martel
Paperback, 401 pages
Published May 3rd 2004 by Mariner Books (first published September 11th 2001)

Synopsis:

Pi Patel is an unusual boy. The son of a zookeeper, he has an encyclopedic knowledge of animal behavior, a fervent love of stories, and practices not only his native Hinduism, but also Christianity and Islam. When Pi is sixteen, his family emigrates from India to North America aboard a Japanese cargo ship, along with their zoo animals bound for new homes.
The ship sinks. Pi finds himself alone in a lifeboat, his only companions a hyena, an orangutan, a wounded zebra, and Richard Parker, a 450-pound Bengal tiger. Soon the tiger has dispatched all but Pi, whose fear, knowledge, and cunning allow him to coexist with Richard Parker for 227 days lost at sea. When they finally reach the coast of Mexico, Richard Parker flees to the jungle, never to be seen again. The Japanese authorities who interrogate Pi refuse to believe his story and press him to tell them "the truth." After hours of coercion, Pi tells a second story, a story much less fantastical, much more conventional-but is it more true?
Life of Pi is at once a realistic, rousing adventure and a meta-tale of survival that explores the redemptive power of storytelling and the transformative nature of fiction. It's a story, as one character puts it, to make you believe in God

Why I am Waiting:

I know this is kind of cheating and this book has already came out but I am really waiting to read it. Currently, I am reading The Time Traveler's Wife and it is a really good book but also kind of long. I have Life of Pi sitting waiting to be read. I have heard really great reviews about it and the movie of it just came out today. I want to read it before I see the movie. =]

Top Ten Tuesday: Authors That I Am Thankful For.

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. This feature was created because they are particularly fond of lists at The Broke and the Bookish. They love to share lists.
Top Ten Authors I am thankful for:

1) I am thankful for J.K. Rowling for writing an amazing book series that went throughout my childhood and taught me how to grow up and believe in magic.

2) I am thankful for Veronica Roth for introducing me to the world of dystopian literature. Divergent was one of the first dystopians I have read and really enjoyed.

3) I am thankful for Beth Revis for taking me to the stars and across the universe and tricking my mind in ways only she could and lieing to me all in the process.

4) I am thankful for Suzanne Collins for creating a universe that shows us what could happen if people stray from what is right and how the power and will of the individual can affect the whole.

5) I am thankful for Lois Lowry for showing me a new way to look at the world and not take certain things for granted.

6) I am thankful for Rick Riordan for teaching me that it is okay to be a kid again and believe in mythology.

7) I am thankful for Jackson Pearce for writing totally kick ass novels and saying that it is okay to believe in fairytales again.

8) I am thankful for Marissa Meyer for being so imaginative and creating a book that incorporates so many cool elements and has you believing in fairytales once again.

9) + 10) Okay I can't really think of anyone else. So this is kind of a cop out. I am thankful for all of the books I have read as a child, that really got me into reading. I am thankful for my family and friends. Finally, I am thankful for this blog and all of the people that like it and comment on it. This has been a real outlet to get my feelings about books out to the world. Thank you to everyone. =]

Follow Friday(26)

Gain New Blog Followers

Follow Friday is a weekly blog hop event hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read.
This week's Question is:

Q: Books are turned into movies all the time! Turn it around. What movie would make a great book?

There are just about a ton of movies that I can think of that would make great books. This is such an awesome question.

I thought of 3 movies in particular that would make awesome books.

#1 The Titanic

#2 The Matrix 1, 2, and 3.

and

#3 Avatar

I am sure there are a million more movie into book combos that I could come up with. The movies I listed are some of my all time favorites and I would love to see them get turned into books, mabe even books to expand on the original story lines. I mean, for the Titanic could expand on what happened to Rose after she survived. Forthe Matrix, it could expand on what happens to Zion and the machines after Neo died. For Avatar, we could see what is happening on that other planet. This was a great question, it really got me thinking. Help me out by linking me to your Follow Friday so I can see what movies you guys came up with. =]

Review: Fathomless by Jackson Pearce

Fathomless (Fairytale Retellings, #3)
Hardcover, 304 pages
Published September 4th 2012 by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

Synopsis:

Celia Reynolds is the youngest in a set of triplets and the one with the least valuable power. Anne can see the future, and Jane can see the present, but all Celia can see is the past. And the past seems so insignificant -- until Celia meets Lo.

Lo doesn't know who she is. Or who she was. Once a human, she is now almost entirely a creature of the sea -- a nymph, an ocean girl, a mermaid -- all terms too pretty for the soulless monster she knows she's becoming. Lo clings to shreds of her former self, fighting to remember her past, even as she's tempted to embrace her dark immortality.

When a handsome boy named Jude falls off a pier and into the ocean, Celia and Lo work together to rescue him from the waves. The two form a friendship, but soon they find themselves competing for Jude's affection. Lo wants more than that, though. According to the ocean girls, there's only one way for Lo to earn back her humanity. She must persuade a mortal to love her . . . and steal his soul.

My Thoughts/Review:

I am so glad that I started reading this one right after I read Sweetly. Even though it is a different story completely it blends greatly going from one book to the other. The characters in this book are amazingly complex. They all have a spark and energy to them that makes you want to delve more into their personal story. Celia is a triplet and I am a twin so I completly relate to what Celia is going through with her sisters. I can't really explain the premise without revealing spoilers, so I am not going to.

All I am going to say is that it is an amazing retelling of The Little Mermaid that has some major unique twists and turns throughout the entire book. I loved all of the uniqueness and shockers in this book. The ending was fantastic and just how I would have wanted it to end if I was writing this fairytale series. Jackson Pearce, once again, is a fantastic writer. You can tell that she thinks about every word she puts on the page. Lo, who acts as the kind of "mermaid" in this book was also fantastic. I loved the struggles that she had to go through and how she got through them in the end. You got to explore all the complexities and conflicting feelings that were the foundation of this book. You get to find out some more backstory a little bit into the Fenris world and what other bad things they are doing.

The one thing I would have to say negatively about this book was that it wasn't as exciting as Sisters Red or Sweetly. I found myself reading it more slowly and didn't think about it all the time like the others. That said, I could have been in a funk or didn't want to read it quickly. Overall I really loved the ending and the complete package this book offered me. If you haven't read Pearce's fairytale retellings series, I definitely recommend it to everyone. Please check them out. I swear they won't disappoint. I can not wait for Pearce's next book and the continuation of this series, it is really getting good. I am really hoping for a fantastic ending at some point where all the characters from each of the books come together and beat the fenris. Here's Wishing and Hoping. =]

Overall, I give this book:
An Under the Sea, fantastic retelling of a "little mermaid." =]

Hiding from a government agency that would expose them, the Best family appears to consist of a single mother with one daughter named Elizabeth. Follow Friday(25)

Gain New Blog Followers

Follow Friday is a weekly blog hop event hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read.

This week's Question is:

Q: What is a deal breaker for you in a book? For example, do you abhor love triangles? Or can't deal with bad editing?

I don't have that many deal breakers but I do have some. I will normally try any book in any genre but if there is something about the premise I don't like or it doesn't get intersting at all then I won't like the book and I will either have to struggle through it or put it down. This is why I try and choose books I will know that I will like and are in genres I like. Other things that are deal breakers in a book is writing that I just plain don't understand. Sometimes this happens in classics, sometimes in books with weird language like Clockwork Orange. Sometimes it just won't be a book for me. If I don't understand the book and where it is going I will have to put it down.

Not much else is a deal breaker for me. I mean many annoying things like bad editing and spelling mistakes can be overlooked if the story is really good. I don't take books that seriously for me not to over look some mistakes but the stuff I mentioned above I can't look the other way with.
